FIRST SIGNS OF AGING: "SKINTELLIGENCE"

Like me, if you and the majority of your client demographic are Generation X-er’s, also known as the children of baby boomers, you will have most definitely noticed shifting in skins behaviour and new shopping patterns. Recently I have experienced a significant increase in inquiries about what to do regarding these changes along with the troubled feelings towards it. First we need to understand what’s actually happening.

Being in skin care and esthetics education for a large part of my career, I have become extremely comfortable with interpreting our skin science text books, explaining those lessons and even applying them to my own skin needs. With hopes on assisting both you and ultimately your clients and shoppers, here are my best tips to the most common first signs of aging complaints.

Problems: Pores look larger, skin texture is less smooth and fine lines appear

Why it’s happening: Although it appears pores are becoming larger, what is actually happening is that the pores are becoming sunken. This is caused by collagen and peptide depletion. Collagen depletion is a natural aging process which cannot be stopped or let’s face it we would have found the fountain of youth! The depletion of this protein within the skin can be worsened by smoking, sun damage and dehydration. Imagine microscopic balloons or pillows within our skin, this is the primary job/effect of collagen. With age those balloons or pillows start to lose their fullness and slowly start to deflate.

So what can we do? We can make changes from the inside and outside!

From the inside: Increasing water consumption and decreasing dehydrating factors including sodium and caffeine consumption. Increasing amino acid intake via certain foods to help replenish those proteins. We can also increase vitamin C intake, which strengthens outer cellular walls making it more difficult for collagen and peptide loss.

From the outside: Exfoliating more effectively can change our skin routine and can replenish nutrients back into the skin. The older we get the harder it is for our skin to let go of excess dead skin build-up, making it more and more important to exfoliate. Dead skin build up will contribute to a dull look and feel to your skin texture. Build up can block pores as well as act as a barrier to your serums and moisturizers, thus decreasing their ability/effectiveness.

Change your routine: As your skin changes, so must your routine. If you don’t normally wash your make up off every night and it is talc based makeup, it is working against your skin needs and your skin care’s ability. If you only exfoliate once or twice a week, consider increasing it to 2-3 times per week. If you don’t normally use a serum under your moisturizer consider adding that to your daily routine. Or if you only use a serum once a day, consider increasing it to twice a day.

Change the quality of your moisturizer: Let’s give back what the skin needs in spades. As you may know blood is what carries oxygen and nutrients to the skin. As epidermal skin layers are not vascular, they rely on what we give back to the skin from an external source. Let’s compare our moisturizers to food. If you are hungry you can choose to eat at a fast food place or salad bar. Both places will address your hunger but what nutrients are we getting from each choice? Now let’s compare moisturizer choices. If you or your client choose to use a face cream produced for mass markets, I guarantee it will be far less potent or concentrated with proper nutrients that the skin needs. Would you choose to eat at that same low nutrition fast food place every day? Of course not. Let’s at least give our deserving clients an ideal daily and weekly routine with special focus on their face cream and long lasting treatment products.

Let’s all do our skin an enormous favour and maximize exposure to what our skin is starting to lose by making these skintellegent adjustments and choices!
